We met recently with the Ministry of Finance’s Auto Insurance policy lead. We spoke about the access to care impact of low provider rates when experienced clinicians leave the sector. We talked about the increasing administrative burden on providers and the impacts on care with dispute and conflict creating unnecessary obstacles to treatment, and the alignment often in place between provider and claimant concerns. When asked “what one thing” we’d suggest to improve the sector, our ‘blue sky’ was one with fewer buckets, where injuries needn’t be categorized so soon post-injury so that consumers could access more timely, and therefore more effective, care. This met with a response that indicates that care-not-cash is top of mind at the Ministry. While we didn’t glean anything more ‘what and when’ specific we were assured that there would be a consultation process prior to implementation.
Meanwhile at FSRA the multi-stakeholder Technical Advisory Committee has been asked to consider the Time for a Tune Up report and expect it to be discussed at an upcoming meeting.
This important story – just one of many – is finally being told. It’s factually true that insurers “are not prohibited from paying above the hourly rates provided in the guidelines” as FSRA is quoted as saying here, (and as they’ve said to us on many occasions). But those of us who work in this sector know that this happens only occasionally – and often only after protracted negotiation. And some insurance companies have a non-negotiable stance.
Seriously injured people who paid for their auto insurance in good faith can too easily find themselves without the support they need to live and rehabilitate with dignity.
